Meditation is the way help mind more quiet and focus inwardly for a set period of time. Its a powerful way to reduce stress, boost memory, promote relaxation, concentration and mood but the question it: Can it actually help you life longer?
Many proof prove that regular meditation can improve psychological conditions like anxiety and depression, which effect to death percentage. Meditation also proved that will improve the immune system and reduce levels of cortisol, known as the stress hormone. Higher mortality caused by levels of cortisol, leads to some dangerous issue such as atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome.
According to a 2011 study published in the Journal of Obesity, regular meditation may result in fewer visits to the doctor and shorter hospital stays.
A review of two randomize controlled trials was published in 2005 in The American Journal of Cardiology, is about the effects of meditation specifically on mortality. The trials devide into two group of people:
- First group included participants with mild hypertension (high blood pressure) who lived in an elderly residence with an average age of 81 years.
- Second group included community-dwelling older adults with an average age of 67 years.
They were given the instruction in either Transcendental Meditation.
What is Transcendental Meditation (TM) is known as a simple technique that include sitting comfortably with the eyes closed for 15 to 20 minutes per session, twice a day, to achieve a state of “restful alertness.” Trainning focus on breathing and observing thoughts dispassionately whenver they arise in the mind. Those who participate in trials were encouraged to repeat a phrase or verse to themselves during each session. At final, they used progressive muscle relaxation were coached to gradually let go of tension in each major muscle group.
The trials will last three months, both 2 group results is significantly lower blood pressure than the other meditation and control groups. Those who participating in trials were 23 percent less likely to die of any cause during that period and 30 percent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease during the same period. Also reduce 49 percent to die of cancer.
According to authors, benefits of meditations almost better than medicine therapy for hypertension. But they not recommend using meditations to reduce higher blood pressure.
But still there two improtant questions remain is: Will meditation improve longevity for people with normal blood pressure? and Which type of relaxation or meditation technique provides the greatest longevity benefit?
Maybe future research can answer this with greater certainty, but many are satistfied with the boosts of energy and well-being that meditation offers in the short-term. So get started and try to do regular meditation in your daily life.
